Colour Block Wall Ideas
What a fabulous time to be cheering our homes up, all this extra time spent indoors is sure to make us look around and realise jobs that need doing, and more importantly thinking of making changes. I am an absolute lover of making affordable small improvements to spaces, that add some cheer, are fun to do and have quick results! I do love myself a little bit of up-cycling, finding a little lonely neglected piece of furniture sitting in the back of a charity shop. The enjoyment, satisfaction and accomplishment you feel when making small changes is so rewarding, as well as being great for uplifting spirits.
I wanted to write a short blog, I don’t want to bore you with huge amounts of technical interior design speech, but more offer a few ideas for one of my absolute favourite ways to update a space. It is simple, fun, utterly creative and rewarding. Within the interior design group I am a member of, I am known for my love of it, yes, I want to talk about Colour Blocking.
I love it! It adds interest, fun, it can be as subtle or crazy as you want and by the end of this blog I promise you will be popping your shoes on to pop to B&Q to grab some frog tape!
Let me begin with cost. Come on, be honest, how much paint do you have in your garage? Half a tub here and there, and what will you ever do with it all? Create a wow factor to a corner, add a stripe here and there, go all out artistic and create a super detailed colour block on the boring plain wall you just keep looking at. Go and have a peek, see what you could come up without having to purchase a thing!
The geometric design
If you have a wall that has been sitting plain for a while and can’t decide on one colour or a wallpaper, then this will be right up your street. Pick 3 colours around your scheme, these could be from the same colour family in different shades, or completely opposite to add some drama, and create a great wow feature!
The round design
You may already have a painted wall but it needs some added pizazz. Enhancing the shapes of items already in that space creates a fun twist on colour blocking. Again, for this design choose 3 different colours, either from the same family, or complete opposites! Within this design I have enhanced the soft arch of the round mirror to add interest and frame that focal point.
The Creating a zone design
A great way to create a zone, perhaps you have desk facing a wall, a dressing table in the corner?
Don’t hide it away make it the feature, but highlight it with some colour blocking!
Adding vertical stipes creates a zone, creates a feeling a height for that space, and gives you something more interesting to look at than a plain wall!. The trick to creating these horizontal stripes is measure, measure, measure! Use a spirit level to ensure your lines are straight before beginning!
The woo let’s use all the tester pots I have and go crazy design.
My home office space, well here I kinda went all out crazy. I did have a huge array of tester pots, hence why I just did small thin stripes. I wanted to add some interest to the plain dark blue wall, and by using tester pots and picking out the colours already in the space, I created horizontal stripes to tie the space together, and add an interesting feature. A great way to use up those tester pots hiding under the sink.
Again for this, you must ensure you use a spirit level and ensure those lines are straight! I will tell you a secret…I didn’t! So many people comment on my stripes when I am on video calls and ask me how I got them so straight, believe me they’re not! In person, they really do look like I did it after copious amounts of gin, it was lockdown number one, so perhaps I had had a few afternoon gins! Who knows! I do regret my choice of being too rushy, and wanting to produce something far too quickly, so please use a spirit level, you will thank me later! If you do use one, you can have a gin and tonic afterwards to celebrate the straightness and perfection of your lines!!
Now I know you are itching to go and have a think, have a play and if you do go for it and love it as much as me, please tag in your pictures!
Think about what colours are in your space already, and tie those colours into your design.
If you want me to assist in designing a colour block for a wall or corner in your home, my online consultations are great for this, we could have a chat, and I could provide a small image of your design as shown in this blog and then you can have some fun!
